This interest in digital obsolescence brought me to an unlikely place: In 2011, I found myself knocking on the door of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. I was in the city visiting the Carnegie Museum of Art, where I had been invited by curator Tina Kukielski to do an exhibition opening the following year. The trip to Warhol’s hometown, now the site of the museum that bears his name—a sister institution to the Carnegie—offered the perfect opportunity to follow up on a few questions involving digital decay and Warhol’s relationship to it, questions that had been bouncing around my head for several years. Specifically: Did Andy Warhol really have an Amiga computer, as I had long heard rumored? If so, what had happened to his disks, and had anyone ever looked at them?
